Aesyr - Northern MaraudersAesyri [AY - seer - ee] are raiders and ocean-farers from the Northern Sea. Though shorter than many of their seagoing opponents, the Aesyri are almost uniformly muscular and broad-shouldered. Aesyri tend to have blue or green eyes and light-coloured hair, with red being the most common. Cursed with fair skin, they have developed a process of using blubber to both insulate against the cold and protect themselves from sunburn and heat exhaustion. Of all the northern seafarers, the Aesyri are considered the most brutal. They think nothing of dispatching a fallen foe, and are rumoured to eat the flesh of those they defeat. The Aesyr nation is considered to have the most misogynistic culture known to Maldani scholars, though women taken from Aesyri are either pathetically grateful or else immediately turn around and return to their homes. The Aesyri are famed slavers, taking their captives back to their northern homes. Few people ever return from this captivity, and those that do tell tales of horror involving monsters, many of which are human. The former slaves are rarely able to return to a normal life, and the church has had to take most of them in as wards. Feared though the warriors of Aesyr may be, their neyori (dragon priests) are known to cause entire fleets of warboats to dissolve in panic. These men (females discovered to have magical abilities are inevitably slain) are often disfigured, but they wield great arcane might. They are known to have contact with the Citadel of Chorm, and many believe they are its masters.
