Yjsen - Inveterate Islanders

Yjsen [YEYE - sin] tribes live throughout the northern parts of the Outer Lothings as well as along the coast of the mainland. They are by far the most numerous people in this area, and consider themselves the rulers. Unfortunately, each clan considers itself to be the only one worthy of this rulership, and they war with each other constantly, seeking ascendency.

The Yjsen are very confident in their cultural superiority, and do not hesitate to sneer at those of lesser cultures. The particular target of their scorn is the Skojik people, who long ago fled the attacks of the Yjsen to subjugate themselves to a lesser kingdom (in the view of the Yjsen).

Yjsen adults routinely top six feet in height, and have hair of russet, red, brown, or black. Their skin is bronze-brown, and their eyes are usually amber or pale brown. Clan membership is passed down through the mother's line, so women feel much freer to marry outside their clan (or even the Yjsen) than men.

Master crafters are glorified in Yjsen culture, much moreso than by their neighbours. As a result, the equipment and goods of the Yjsen have acquired a reputation for excellence, and this only strengthens the scorn that many Yjsen feel for other peoples.
